Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many entrants get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical concept in nearly all poker games.
The low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.
It may seem complicated at first, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease.
