Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in popularity so quickly.
Omaha hi low begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of betting follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants can get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same notion in just about all poker games.
A lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
While it seems difficult at the outset, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the base nuances of play easily enough. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing collection of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many individuals shooting for the high, along with several battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
