Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players often get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical concept in almost all poker games.
The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem difficult initially, following a few hands you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease.
