Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he loved betting on various card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in these card games while competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and moved away to New York to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he played extensive hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he might improve his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and focus more on poker.
The actual advancement in his game began when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would frequently challenge each other. He was able to access several of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would sharpen his cunning thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. He told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP competition. She is one of the best women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard relocated to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and played cash games for the next 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
