Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker contender on the globe by many of the top professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before reaching the age of one. His grandpa taught him penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup everything he could about poker. He would tell his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t permit the negative feedback from other people kill his goal of becoming one of the greatest poker competitors in the world.
Phil started competing seriously after getting a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his skills at the casinos of Atlantic City. The first number of years for him were a learning opportunity and winning wasn’t a regular outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he defeated many of the better known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Sin City. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to discipline and an immeasurable passion for poker. He states that he’s learning every single day and is incredibly humble about his achievements. He admits to making errors every single game of poker and always aspires to improve.
Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some big-time tournaments, he favors destroying cash games on a normal basis.
