Gaming chips have been manufactured from a varied range of materials in an almost endless assortment of variations since the advent of wagering and the need to keep an eye on winnings. The most familiar components used today in the creation of modern poker chips are plastic, clay, and acrylics. Clay chips, the original of the group, have been made in America since the late 19th century.
Back in the 19th century, poker enthusiasts appear to be using any small valuable object you can imagine. Early poker players sometimes employed rough gold pieces as well as chips – chiefly manufactured of wood and clay. By the 1900s, poker chip features started to play a bigger prominence, and the smooth sides of older chips gave way to chips with engraved slits to hold them neatly stacked together.
There is little debate that poker has grown steadily in acceptance since its beginnings in the 19th century. With the explosive advancement of internet gaming and unique TV shows, community interest in poker has accelerated faster than ever before. Most folks are first introduced to poker by TV showssuch as Bravo’s "Celebrity Poker Showdown" or "Poker After Dark," and many will wager on their 1st hands on the net. Despite net poker’s rise, nothing replaces the feeling of mixing heavy poker chips in your hand, tossing chips into the center of a poker table, or stacking high pilesstacks of chips after showing a winning hand.
